According to the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry Cannabis seem to offer relief to the painful muscle stiffness typical of multiple sclerosis(MS) according to phase III trial results.Â
90% of MS patients undergo painful stiffness during a specific period in the cause of the condition. The painful stiffness reduces their mobility, affecting their daily physical routine activities and sleep quality.
The current treatment options in the market have not been effective in easing the symptoms. Other treatment options have turned harmful, which is why the majority of patients have turned to alternative therapies such as medical cannabis to treat the MS symptoms.
Cannabis as a treatment option has become so popular. It has even become embraced by mainstream medicine. A study was conducted in the UK to gauge the effects of cannabis when used to treat MS disease patients. Therefore, adult MS patients with stable disease from 22 different specialist centers were assigned to cannabis extract(THC) daily or a placebo pill for a period of 12weeks.
The treatments in these centers were given in gradually increasing doses from 2.5mg up to a maximum of 25mg for two weeks. Maintenance doses followed this for the remaining 10 weeks. The purpose of this treatment was to see whether the cannabis extract eased muscle stiffness, associated pain, muscle spasms and sleep quality. This was done using a validated 11point rating scale.
After the first two weeks of treatment, 87% of those taking the placebo were on the maximum daily dose compared with just under half of those (47%) taking the cannabis extract.
After 12 weeks, one in four patients treated with cannabis extract was taking a maximum daily dose compared with over two thirds (69.4%) of those taking the placebo.
When the study came to an end, the rate of relief from muscle stiffness was twice as high among those given the cannabis extract as those given the placebo. Muscle stiffness eased in 30% of the patients given cannabis. This is a lot compared to 16% of the patients that were treated with placebo.
The significant difference was noticeable between 4-8weeks after the treatment began. The improvement extended to pain, muscle spasms and sleep quality during that period.
The differences were most apparent among the patients who weren’t already using antispasmodic treatment. Most of such patients gained relief.
As per the side effects, the patients taking cannabis extract experienced the highest side effects during the first two weeks of treatment. The side effects were nervous system disorders and gut problems. The most encouraging thing was that none of the reported side effects were severe.
The authors of this study can safely conclude that cannabis extract could be a useful treatment for muscle problems that come as a result of Multiple Sclerosis. The cannabis extract provides effective pain relief, especially for the patients who are in considerable pain.
Patients who are turning to alternative medicine like cannabis for their treatment of Multiple Sclerosis should do so under the guidance of a certified cannabis doctor. Self-administering this treatment is not advisable because cannabis is a psychoactive drug that might react differently depending on the medical condition and previous treatments. With a professional administering the cannabis treatment, any side-effects can be dealt with effectively.
Cannabis is a proven way of relieving multiple sclerosis pain. Many patients across the united states are benefiting greatly from it.
