Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) is a rare form of epilepsy typically presenting in children between the ages of 3 and 5. The seizures that accompany LGS are multiple and concurrent, contributing to cognitive dysfunction for patients with this disease.
A recent analysis of data from November 2016 has concluded that the long-term use of CBD in LGS patients can result in a sustained reduction in seizures. And CBD was found to have an “acceptable safety profile” when used medicinally for these patients.
The data analyzed was from 368 LGS patients who completed treatment for a median duration of 38 weeks. Patients experienced a reduction in seizures ranging between 48 and 60 percent. Overall improvement in symptoms was reported by 88 percent of the patients and caregivers administering CBD to their children with LGS.
But it isn’t just the frequency of seizures that can be helped by the use of medical marijuana. LGS patients using medical cannabis products also report having a better appetite and improved quality of sleep. Some marijuana strains provide more relief than others, but there is no doubt that cannabidiol can help children with epilepsy.
