Amount of Marijuana You Can Posses with a Marijuana Card

State by State List of Medical Cannabis Possession Laws

  1. Alaska Ballot Measure 8 passed in 1998 with a 58% majority allows up to 1 ounce of usable medical marijuana. Patients may cultivate up to 6 cannabis plants of which no more than 3 may be mature at any one time.
  2. Arizona Proposition 203 passed in 2010 with a 50.13% majority and allows medical marijuana patients to possess up to 2.5 ounces in any 14- day period. If a medical marijuana patient lives more than 25 miles from a registered nonprofit medical marijuana dispensary, a patient may grow up to 12 cannabis plants.
  3. California Proposition 215 passed in 1996 with a 56% majority allows patients to possess up to 8 ounces of usable medical marijuana. Patients may cultivate 6 mature cannabis plants or 12 immature plants.
  4. Colorado Ballot Amendment 20 passed in 2000 with a 54% majority allows medical marijuana possession up to 2 ounces of medical marijuana in usable form. Patients are allowed to grow no more than 6 cannabis plants with 3 or fewer being mature at any one time.
  5. Connecticut House Bill 5389 passed in 2012 with a 96-51 House and 21-13 Senate majority will allow for medical marijuana possession that is reasonably necessary to ensure uninterrupted availability for a period of 1 month. As of this moment in time, the Department of Consumer Protection has not outlined specific amounts. 6.
  6. DC Amendment Act B 18-622 passed in 2010 with a 13-0 vote. Medical marijuana possession amounts are limited to 2 ounces of medicinal cannabis however the Mayor may increase the medical marijuana possession amount to 4 ounces.
  7. Delaware Senate Bill 17 passed in 2011 with a 27-14 House and a 17-4 Senate vote. Patients may possess up to 6 ounces of medical marijuana however, a registered dispensary may not dispense more than 3 ounces of marijuana to a patient in any 14 day period.
  8. Hawaii Senate Bill 862 passed in 2000 with a 32-18 House and a 13-12 Senate vote. Medical marijuana possession amounts are limited to 3 ounces of usable medical marijuana. Patients are allowed to cultivate up to 7 cannabis plants with no more than 3 being mature at any one time.
  9. Maine Ballot Question 2 passed in 2012 with a 61% majority. The Maine medical marijuana possession amounts are limited to 1.25 ounces of usable cannabis and the cultivation of no more than 6 plants, of which no more than 3 may be mature.
  10. Massachusetts Ballot Question 3 passed in 2012 with a 63% majority. Medical Marijuana possession amounts will amount to what is necessary for patient’s personal medical use not exceeding a 60 day supply. The state has 120 days from the effective date of law to issue exact possession amounts.
  11. Michigan Proposal 1 passed in 2008 with a 63% majority. Patients are allowed to possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis and 12 cannabis plants kept in an enclosed locked facility.
  12. Montana Initiative 148 passed in 2004 with a 62% majority. Patients may possess up to 1 ounce of medical cannabis and be permitted to cultivate 6 marijuana plants.
  13. Nevada ballot Question 9 passed in 2000 with a 65% majority. Medical Marijuana possession amounts are limited to no more than 1 ounce of cannabis and 7 plants of which no more than 3 are mature at any one time.
  14. New Jersey Senate Bill 119 passed in 2010 with a 48-14 House and 25-13 Senate majority. Under New Jersey medical marijuana possession laws, physicians are to determine how much marijuana a patient needs. Maximum amount is 2 ounces for a 30-day period.
  15. New Mexico Senate Bill 523 passed in 2007 with a 36-31 House and 25-13 Senate majority. Patients have the right to possess up to 6 ounce of usable medical marijuana, four mature plants and 12 seedlings.
  16. Oregon Ballot Measure 67 passed in 1998 with a 55% majority. Medical Marijuana possession amounts are limited to 24 ounces of usable cannabis and 6 mature cannabis plants.
  17. Rhode Island Senate Bill 0710 assed in 2006 with a 52-10 House and 33-1 Senate vote. Patients are allowed to cultivate up to 12 marijuana plants or 2.5 ounces of cultivated marijuana.
  18. Vermont Senate Bill 76 and House Bill 645 passed in 2004 with a 22-7 vote and 82-59 vote respectively. Medical Marijuana Patients are permitted to possess no more than 2 ounces of cannabis and 7 plants of which no more than 2 plants are mature.
  19. Washington Initiative 692 passed in 1998 with a 59% majority. Medical Marijuana Possession amounts are limited to 24 ounces of usable medical cannabis and 15 cannabis plants.
