  • Getting medical marijuana safely and legally in Massachusetts towns like Stoughton, Mass., is as easy as three steps:

    1. Ask your local marijuana doctor to assess your MMJ needs
    2. Send in an application to the folks at the Department of Public Health
    3. Use your new MMJ card to buy medical marijuana from a licensed dispensary

We’re happy to walk you through all three of them so you can get the natural relief you need.

    Step One: The Assessment

For Massachusetts to consider you for the medical marijuana program, you must prove you have a valid condition. That’s where marijuana doctors come in — they evaluate patients for their eligibility, not just give recommendations for MMJ.

You might already see a doctor who’s already gotten the green light from the DPH to provide medical marijuana-related services. If not, you’ll have to seek one out, since only approved doctors can assess you.

During your visit, the physician will check that you have a condition that Massachusetts law considers eligible for MMJ treatment. The law directly mentions some valid illnesses, like cancer, HIV/AIDS, Parkinson’s and glaucoma. But, it also approves other disorders that severely impact your ability to complete everyday functions.

If the doctor thinks that you qualify under the law, they’ll send your information to the state so you can continue to the next step.

    Step Two: The Application

You can choose between two application methods when you submit your registration to the DPH:

    • Online. Shortly after hearing from your doctor, the DPH will email you a PIN that you can use to make an account on their online registration portal.
    • With pen and paper. You can call (617) 660-5370 to get a paper form to mail back in. This will take a little longer than using the Internet.

While applying, make sure you have an ID, proof of residency, a suitable ID photo and a $50 payment at the ready. For more information about the documents you need, check out the DPH’s application guide.

    Step Three: The Dispensary Visit

Once the state approves your application, they’ll send you a medical marijuana card in the mail. You can use it to purchase medicine from an MMJ dispensary with a recommendation from your marijuana doctor. MMJ doesn’t get prescribed or stocked at pharmacies due to being federally outlawed.

Where to Look for a Doctor Who Can Assess You

Massachusetts doesn’t provide its own list of approved MMJ doctors, so patients need to do some detective work yourself. Luckily, we’ve taken care of some of that intense research for you. You can use our directory to find certified doctors near you, or ask your doctor if they want to register.
