Massachusetts Medical Marijuana

Ballot Question 3 – was approved by 63% of voters on November 6, 2012 and went into effect January 1, 2013.

Massachusetts law allows residents who suffer from a debilitating disease to receive a letter from their attending physician stating that they recommend the use of medical marijuana as an alternative treatment for that patient. When a patient receives a written recommendation from their physician to use medical marijuana, they may possess and use cannabis in accordance with the regulations set by the Department of Health.

Massachusetts Regulations Regarding Medical Marijuana Possession

According to Ballot Question 3 patients may possess no more marijuana than is needed for the patient’s personal, medical use. That amount shall not exceed the quantity needed for a sixty (60) day supply.

December 19, 2013 – The Department of Health’s website wrote: “Patients who have a physician's written certification for the medical use of marijuana will not be required to register with the Department of Public Health (DPH) on January 1, 2014. DPH will not begin registering patients and caregivers until it completes development of an online registration system, at a date to be announced later in 2014.”
