Illinois Medical Marijuana

Illinois Medical Marijuana Program and General Medical Cannabis Info

House Bill 1 was approved by the House 61-57 on April 17, 2013 and by the State Senate 35-21 on May 17, 2013. Governor Pat Quinn signed the Bill into law on August 1, 2013. It became effective January 1, 2014.

The legal medical marijuana program for the state of Illinois allows medical marijuana patients to receive a marijuana recommendation from a certified physician, apply for a state-issue Illinois medical marijuana identification card, and purchase marijuana for medical use per Illinois state guidelines.

Possession Limitations

Patients and their assigned caregivers may possess an “adequate supply”, defined as 2.5 ounces of marijuana over a 14-day period that is obtained strictly through and intrastate source. The Illinois law does not permit patients or their caregivers to cultivate their own marijuana. All medicine must be purchased through state licensed at taxed dispensaries.

The Illinois medical marijuana program is relatively new, becoming effective just at the beginning of this year. As of this writing there are no state licensed dispensaries currently servicing patients, however Illinois does have an extensive list of qualifying conditions and therefore is considered to be one of the more patient friendly states.
